What to Actually Look For
Weight and drape. Premium cotton and cotton-blend fabrics should have enough structure to hold the jacket's line, without feeling like cardboard. Run your hand down the front. It should fall, not stiffen.
Weave consistency. Hold the fabric up to light. An even, tight weave signals quality control at the mill. Irregular spacing or visible slubs (outside of intentional textured fabrics) usually means corners were cut upstream.
Hand feel. This is the simplest test and the most reliable one. Good fabric feels cool and smooth against the back of your hand, not scratchy or synthetic-slick.
